THE ISSUE
Multiple automotive manufacturers are either currently producing electric vehicles or have plans to create future electric vehicle models. While these car companies include Tesla, Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Honda, and others, there are hardly any electric motorcycle manufacturers. The only major electric motorcycle manufacturer that sells in America is Zero Motors. This lack of competition currently results in few models and inflated prices, making the technology unaccessible to many.
OUR IMPACT
Designing and fabricating an open source motorcycle could be used to open the market for future electric vehicles available to the public. The open source nature of the motorcycle will be utilized by teaching future engineering students about the potential for sustainability in the automotive industry. Not only could the motorcycle introduce a need for sustainability to these students, but it could also allow for these students to develop a background necessary for a future career in the automotive industry for improving the future's sustainable designs. In addition, an electric motorcycle designed and created at James Madison University will help America's outlook on electric vehicle research and design, leading toward a larger market in the future.
